Colusa County – PG&E Public Safety Power Shutoff Information (PSPS)
What is a PSPS event?
A Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) event is a proactive safety measure where electric power is temporarily turned off to lines in high-risk areas to help prevent wildfires during severe weather conditions.
Why PG&E calls a PSPS event
For public safety, power is proactively turned off when gusty winds and dry conditions, combined with a heightened fire risk, are forecasted. Predictions of strong winds are just one of several criteria considered before initiating a safety shutoff. PG&E looks closely at a combination of factors, including but not limited to:
- A Red Flag Warning declared by the National Weather Service
- Low humidity levels, generally 20% and below
- Forecasted sustained winds, generally above 25 mph and wind gusts in excess of approximately 45 mph, depending on location and site-specific conditions (such as temperature, terrain, and local climate)
- Condition of dry fuel on the ground and live vegetation (moisture content)
- On-the-ground, real-time observations from PG&E’s Wildfire Safety Operations Center and field crews
PG&E anticipates that Public Safety Power Shutoffs may occur several times a year within its service area. However, rapidly changing environmental conditions make it impossible to predict exactly when, where, or how often these shutoffs will happen. While customers living in high fire-threat districts are the most likely to be affected, any neighborhood could have its power shut off if its local grid relies on a major power line passing through a high-risk area.
