Factors PG&E Considers for Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) Event
PG&E considers multiple weather and environmental conditions when determining whether to initiate a Public Safety Power Shutoff, including:
- Low humidity
- Forecasted high winds
- Dry material on the ground
- Vegetation near powerlines
- Red Flag Warnings from the National Weather Service
- Real-time ground observations
Changing weather and environmental conditions can affect when, where, and how often PSPS events occur. While areas with higher fire risk are more likely to be affected, any neighborhood may be impacted if its local power system relies on infrastructure serving a high-risk area.
For more information on the factors PG&E considers when determining whether to initiate a PSPS, visit the PG&E Public Safety Power Shutoffs page.
