What is a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) event?

A Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) event is a proactive safety measure where electric power is temporarily turned off to lines in high-risk areas to help prevent wildfires during severe weather conditions.

PG&E may proactively turn off power during periods of high fire risk to help reduce the risk of wildfires. PG&E considers multiple factors when determining whether to initiate a PSPS, including:

  • Low humidity
  • Forecasted high winds
  • Dry material on the ground
  • Vegetation near powerlines
  • Red Flag Warnings from the National Weather Service
  • Real-time ground observations 

PSPS events can occur several times a year, and changing weather and environmental conditions make it difficult to predict when, where, or how often they will occur. While areas with higher fire risk are more likely to be affected, any neighborhood may be impacted if its local power system relies on infrastructure serving a high-risk area.

Use PG&E’s online tools to check your specific address and view information about current or upcoming power outages and PSPS events. The Address Lookup Tool can be used to check your address for upcoming PSPS events. The PG&E Outage Map can be used to view approximate affected areas and current outages.
